•  1521 – Magellan came to colonize and the start of Spanish Dominance
• named country after King Phillip II of Spain
• 19^th – 20^th century Spanish -American War à United States dominate until it became independent

 ECONOMY:

•  45 % of the population has daily income of less than $2.00/day
• 40 % is below poverty line (less access to safe drinking water, electricity, clean toilet, etc…)
• Average Household Income = $3,000/ yr

 STREET CHILDREN

  1.5 Million are comprised of children working on the streets, sleeping in the streets and others are abandoned or orphaned about 52,000 are amerasians

•  More boys than girls approx. 70%
• Girls are taken/sold out for prostitution
• As early as 10 y/o put in prison with adult
• Girls and boys in the prison are abused
• No record of imprisonment
• Susceptible to vehicular injury, health problems, harassment and abuse in all forms 
• no foster homes and government aid for these kids
• NGO’s( Non-government organizations) and few institutions help
• local churches try to help as well but has very limited resources
